Martin was born in Ville St. Pierre, Quebec, on September 12, 1973. He was drafted by Detroit in the 1991 Entry Draft and was the 1st choice, 10th overall in the first round. Last season, Martin was plus or even in 45 of 58 games and played in his 100th career game on October 13 vs. Edmonton. Martin made his NHL debut on October 5, 1992 at Toronto. He was a first team All-Star in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 1989-90 and played the postseason for Adirondack's Calder Cup Championship in 1992.
